Rickettsial Infections Heat Up in the US - Contagionlive.com

Image
The bacteria that cause rickettsial infections are gram-negative, obligate intracellular organisms. 1 Spotted fever rickettsial (SFR) diseases constitute the majority of rickettsial infections in the United States, and all rickettsial infections are notifiable diseases in the US. This means all documented cases must be reported to the local health department. SFR infections in the US are commonly caused by Rickettsia rickettsii , transmitted by the dog tick ( Dermacentor variabilis) ; Rickettsia parkeri , transmitted by the Gulf Coast tick (Amblyomma maculatum); or Rickettsia akari, transmitted by the bite of an infected mouse mite ( Liponyssoides sanguineus ). 2 All rickettsial infections are most prevalent in the warmer summer months (May-August). In the US, Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF), caused by R rickettsii, is the most dangerous of the rickettsial infections. There were more than 5000 cases of RMSF in the US in 2019, slightly lower than the peak in 2017 of more than 6000

Lethal, Tick Borne, Hemorrhagic Fever Virus May Find Treatment in mAbs - Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology News

Image
As far as emerging, zoonotic, viruses go—Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever Virus (CCHFV) is one to watch. The disease, which is endemic in Africa, the Balkans, the Middle East, and some Asian countries, is considered a priority pathogen by the World Health Organization (WHO). Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever (CCHF) is a life-threatening disease with up to a 40% mortality rate. Originally described in Crimea in the mid-40s, and decades later in the Congo, the virus has recently spread to Western Europe through ticks carried by migratory birds. The virus, as a biosafety level 4 pathogen, has no vaccine and no approved medical countermeasures. Now, researchers have uncovered details about how therapeutically relevant human mAbs may be able to protect against CCHFV. This research is published in Nature Communications in the paper, "Structural characterization of protective non-neutralizing antibodies targeting Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus." It was previously descri

What Is Somatization? – Forbes Health - Forbes

In the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5)—the diagnostic manual used by mental health professionals—the previous disorder class of "somatoform disorders" is now classified as "Somatic Symptom and Related Disorders." These include the following: Somatic Symptom Disorder Somatic symptom disorder (SSD) is characterized by a significant focus on physical symptoms—that may or may not be related to a medical diagnosis—causing excessive worries about the symptoms and their potential consequences, create significant distress or lead to impairment in important areas of functioning, according to the American Psychiatric Association (APA). This can lead to additional physical symptoms as well, explains Sanam Hafeez, Psy.D., a neuropsychologist and director of Comprehend the Mind based in New York City. COVID, flu and RSV in kids: Symptoms to watch and what parents need to know - Axios

Image
There's nothing novel about a child coming home from school in November with a runny and stuffy nose or a cough. But for parents, the stakes feel especially high right now: Is it just a cold? The flu? Or are these tell-tale signs of RSV or COVID? Why it matters: Some of the symptoms of the flu, the respiratory virus and the coronavirus are relatively similar, making it difficult for parents to distinguish between the illnesses as cases are spiking nationwide. And many Americans may be too COVID-fatigued to fret about the reality of a "tripledemic," Axios' Adriel Bettelheim reports. Zoom out: Care could also be impacted by the national shortage of health care workers, which continues to exacerbate hospitals' workloads. Here's an overview of symptoms of RSV, the flu and COVID-19 in children — and what parents should know. RSV symptoms in kids RSV is very contagious and a common illness in children, with most having had an RSV infection by their second birthday,

Parliamentarians Seek To Address Post-COVID 'Tsunami' Of Health System Problems - Health Policy Watch

UNITE president Ricardo Leite (fourth from right) and MPs at the World Health Summit. "There is this tsunami that is happening after the earthquake that was COVID-19 that is now coming to shore and hitting health systems across the world," said Ricardo Baptista Leite, president and founder of UNITE , a global network of parliamentarians committed to addressing global health challenges. "The pandemic also led to a huge economic crisis and even poor countries in the global South, who might have been less affected by the pandemic, are going to pay a very severe price due to economic consequences that will lead to challenges in responding to the health needs of those countries," he said.  A week before his organization brings together hundreds of parliamentarians from around the world to discuss the most pressing issues in public health at a global summit, the Portuguese MP, who collaborates closely with the World Health Organization (WHO), warned Health

Fatigue, sleep quality and mental health symptoms in Brazilian women during the COVID-19 pandemic: longitudinal study | Scientific Reports - Nature.com

Abstract To assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the variables of sleep quality, fatigue, anxiety, and depression in healthy Brazilian women. Longitudinal observational study conducted through an online questionnaire with women in 2020 and 2021. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, the Fatigue Severity Scale and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale were used. The data were analyzed descriptively and the comparison between the data obtained in the first and second evaluation was performed using the McNemar test. A logistic regression was applied to test the association between the variables that showed a significant difference. A total of 235 women responded to the questionnaires. There was a significant increase in fatigue between the two moments ( p  < 0.05). In the first assessment, depression (OR: 2.39; 95% CI: 1.14–4.99), anxiety (OR: 2.68; 95% CI: 1.37–5.22) and sleep quality (OR: 4.01; 95% CI: 1.71–9.67) were associated with fatigue. In the second assessment,
